                              Electrical Grounding

 

One of the biggest advantages of electrical grounding is the protection of your devices and your property against electrical voltage spikes, and its users against electric shocks.

To be more specific, if a discharge of energy, e.g.

If lightning enters your grounded electrical system, then the grounding system performs its function by diverting it to the earth, protecting devices against possible damage.

That's why the Brazilian government recently "mandatorily" instituted the use of three-pole sockets (new socket standard) with a central pin, where the ground wire is located.

Regardless of how a socket is connected, at 127 0 or 220 volts, it must be electrically grounded, thus guaranteeing the safety of the equipment to be installed and its users.

Therefore, it is of no use if the socket has a central pin, but the electrical installation does not have an efficient and correctly installed electrical grounding system. In other words, the ground wire must be available for it to be installed in the socket together with the other power wires, whether 127 or 220 volts.

The main element of electrical grounding is the copper rod, which is embedded on the outside of the property. This must be correctly installed, complying with the minimum ohmic resistance values, thus guaranteeing the efficient functioning of the grounding system.

In some cases it is necessary to install several copper rods,

thus forming an electrical grounding mesh, until acceptable ohmic values are reached, for the proper functioning of the system,

Composition of Electrical Grounding

 

 

 

For an electrical grounding system to function correctly,

it must have the following items:

 

* Copper-plated Metal Rod: Steel bar coated in copper, with size and 

appropriate thickness, which must be planted in the ground, preferably

damp, and which must be provided with "Passage" inspection boxes

 

* Connection cables between the rods: Copper electrical cables, preferably bare,

installed between one rod and another, thus guaranteeing good electrical conductivity.

 

* Connectors: They are brass connectors, covered in copper, ensuring good connection,

between the cable and the grounding rod, there are several types of connectors on the market

for 1 or more electrical cables of different gauges.

 

* Connection Cables: Cables interconnected between the copper rod and the bus,

located inside the distribution board, these electrical cables must

respect the minimum section allowed by nbr-5410.

 

* Copper Busbar: These are copper-plated bars, with several screws

which are located inside the distribution board, where the power cables are connected

 grounding, which starts from the copper rod, this bus that

enables the connection of electrical circuits to be grounded.

 

*Distribution cables: These are electrical cables connected from the bus located in the distribution board,

up to the circuits to be grounded, sockets, lighting, machines, equipment, structures, etc.

 

Remembering that the installation of an efficient electrical grounding system, residential, building, commercial or industrial, guarantees a longer useful life for electrical equipment, against burns, overvoltages and damage.

voltages raised directly to earth.
